A national survey on job coaches` implementation and implementation diffculties of the procedures of supported employment

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate job coaches¡¯ perceptions about the degree of their implementation and implementation difficulties of five procedures of supported employment. These proceduress include: (1) job development and analysis, (2) vocational assessment, (3) job matching, (4) on-site training, and (5) follow-up service. The respondents to the survey developed by the researchers were 155 job coaches from nationwide 62 community disabilities-related agencies and vocational rehabilitation agencies. The results indicated that as regard to the degree of implementation of each of the five procedures, the procedure that job coaches rated the lowest was job development and analysis, as regard to the degree of implementation difficulties, the procedure that job coach rated the highest was on-site training. Overall, the degrees of implementation and implementation difficulties were significantly and negatively correlated. In general, job coaches who had dual certifications showed significantly higher degree of implementing the procedures of supported employment than those who had a single certification. No significant differences in experience of job coaches and in-service training were found. Results were discussed in terms of future efforts to advance the pre-service and in-service training and other supporting systems for the staff development needs of the job coaches and to ultimately enhance the quality of supported employment for persons with severe disabilities in Korea.
